Following up on yesterday’s post about favorite books for children, I naturally find myself thinking about book series that I have read, and especially series that we read aloud growing up. I’ve always loved a terrific book series, since it gives you such a delightful chance to really know and fall in love with characters – and after all, that’s what reading is all about.
Here are two of my favorite series, for both boys & girls alike.
Little House on the Prairie series by Laura Ingalls Wilder – I have two distinct memories involving Little House: one of sitting and listening to my parents read through the entire series and how much I loved “seeing” Laura grow up through the stories, and second, watching the original movie (that piloted and launched the beloved TV series) over and over again until we could practically quote all the dialogue. Laura’s uniquely delightful blend of memoir and storytelling makes for books that are true classics, in every sense. I always loved the Garth Williams illustrations, which complemented the stories beautifully, and even though I now have a new set sitting on my bookshelf, I most distinctly remember my mom’s vintage set, which looks exactly like this lovely picture.
Little Britches series by Ralph Moody – My family absolutely loved these books, although I will admit upfront that we did not read the full series (and my husband tells me that the later books get heavy and depressing). I most distinctly remember Mary Emma & Company, probably because we laughed hysterically the whole way through; I remember my mom, on multiple occasions, putting the book down because she was laughing so hard she couldn’t continue reading. Moody’s compelling and engaging style perfectly drives his stories that exalt family, character, and hard work.
What series of books did you enjoy? Tell me in the comments!
